  • With this 50mg/5ml suspension, 500mg equals 50ml and 250mg equals 25ml.
  • Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration, preferably with or after food.
  • Do not use continuously for longer than prescribed, and do not combine with another NSAID.

For Children

  • Use in children only on the advice of a healthcare professional.
  • A commonly used pediatric regimen is approximately 25mg/kg/day divided into 3 doses, based on body weight and clinical need.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose or duration; treatment is generally limited to short-term use.
  • Not recommended for infants younger than 6 months unless specifically prescribed by a pediatrician.
  • Measure each dose with an oral syringe or calibrated measuring device and shake the suspension well before use.

Side Effects

  • Common effects may include nausea, vomiting, indigestion, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness or headache.
  • Stop use and seek medical help for black stools, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain or persistent diarrhea.
  • Seek urgent care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, severe rash, blistering or skin peeling.
  • Serious effects can include stomach or intestinal bleeding, kidney injury, liver problems, fluid retention, worsening heart failure, heart attack or stroke.
  • Overdose may cause marked drowsiness, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, seizures or other nervous-system effects.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in people with allergy to mefenamic acid, aspirin or other NSAIDs.
  • Avoid in patients with a history of NSAID-related asthma, wheezing, hives or severe allergic reactions.
  • Contraindicated in active stomach or intestinal ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding or inflammatory bowel disease unless specifically directed by a specialist.
  • Avoid in severe kidney, liver or heart disease and in patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure unless medically supervised.
  • Do not use around or after coronary artery bypass surgery.
  • Do not use together with other NSAIDs, including ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac or high-dose aspirin, unless prescribed.

  • May increase bleeding risk with warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, clopidogrel and other anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicines.

  • Use caution with corticosteroids, SSRIs, lithium, methotrexate, cyclosporine, tacrolimus and other medicines that can affect the kidneys or stomach.
  • Alcohol may increase stomach irritation and bleeding risk; avoid or limit it.
  • Take with food or milk if stomach upset occurs, but do not use food to prevent serious NSAID complications.

Pregnancy

  • Ask a doctor before use during pregnancy.
  • Avoid during the third trimester because NSAIDs may harm the fetus and affect labor, fetal circulation or kidney function.
  • Use during the first or second trimester only if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare professional.
