  • Megaloblastic anemia due to vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Support of normal red blood cell formation and nerve function

Usage & Safety

For Adult

  • Use only according to the prescribing physician's instructions and the underlying cause of deficiency.
  • Place the tablet under the tongue and allow it to dissolve; do not chew or swallow it whole unless directed otherwise.
  • Take at approximately the same time each day. Duration of treatment depends on laboratory results and clinical response.

For Children

  • Use in children only when prescribed by a pediatrician.
  • Pediatric dosing is individualized according to age, weight, nutritional status, laboratory findings, and the cause of deficiency.
  • No general pediatric dose or weight limit should be applied without medical supervision.

Side Effects

  • Possible effects include nausea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness, or diarrhea.
  • Skin reactions such as rash, itching, or acneiform eruptions may occur.
  • Rarely, severe allergic reactions may occur, including facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or anaphylaxis; seek emergency care if these develop.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in individuals with a known allergy to mecobalamin, vitamin B12, cobalt, or any component of the product.
  • Seek medical advice before use in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy or significant kidney or liver disease.
  • Do not use it as a substitute for evaluation of unexplained anemia, numbness, weakness, or other neurological symptoms.
  • Long-term use should be medically monitored when treating confirmed deficiency.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Chloramphenicol may reduce the blood-cell response to vitamin B12 treatment.
  • Metformin and prolonged use of acid-suppressing medicines may reduce vitamin B12 levels and may require monitoring.
  • Folic acid may improve anemia while allowing neurological damage from untreated vitamin B12 deficiency to progress; vitamin B12 deficiency should be assessed before using folic acid alone.
  • Tell the healthcare professional about all medicines, vitamins, and supplements being used.

Pregnancy

  • Vitamin B12 is required during pregnancy, but the 2000 mcg dose should be used only when clinically indicated or prescribed.
  • Consult a healthcare professional before starting treatment during pregnancy, especially when deficiency has not been confirmed.
  • Mecobalamin is generally compatible with breastfeeding when medically indicated; discuss prolonged or high-dose use with a healthcare professional.
