Ingredients
- Empagliflozin 10 mg
- Linagliptin 5 mg
Benefits
- Improves blood-glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
- Used together with diet and exercise.
- May be used alone or with other glucose-lowering medicines when prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Usage & Safety
For Adult
- Usual dose: one tablet once daily, taken at approximately the same time each day.
- May be taken with or without food and swallowed whole with water.
- Dosage should be individualized according to blood-glucose control, kidney function, hydration status, and other diabetes medicines.
- Patients using insulin or a sulfonylurea may require dose adjustment to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia.
For Children
- Safety and effectiveness in children and adolescents have not been established.
- Not recommended for pediatric use unless specifically prescribed by a specialist.
- No established pediatric weight-based dose is available.
Side Effects
- Common effects may include increased urination, thirst, dehydration, dizziness, urinary tract infection, genital fungal infection, nasopharyngitis, cough, or headache.
- Low blood sugar is more likely when used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
- Serious reactions may include ketoacidosis, severe dehydration, acute kidney injury, serious urinary or genital infection, pancreatitis, severe joint pain, or allergic reactions.
- Seek urgent care for facial or throat swelling, trouble breathing, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, confusion, or markedly reduced urination.
Contraindications
- Do not use in patients with a known allergy to empagliflozin, linagliptin, or any formulation ingredient.
- Not indicated for type 1 diabetes or treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Use is unsuitable or may require avoidance in severe kidney impairment; kidney function should be assessed before and during treatment.
- Use cautiously in patients prone to dehydration, low blood pressure, recurrent urinary or genital infections, pancreatitis, or ketoacidosis.
- Temporarily stop and seek urgent medical advice if symptoms of ketoacidosis occur, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual tiredness, or difficulty breathing.
Precautions & Warnings
- Insulin and sulfonylureas may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
- Diuretics and medicines that lower blood pressure may increase the risk of dehydration or hypotension.
- Strong enzyme inducers such as rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, and phenytoin may reduce linagliptin exposure and blood-glucose-lowering effect.
- Alcohol may increase dehydration and may contribute to ketoacidosis risk, particularly during illness or reduced food intake.
- Tell the prescriber about all medicines, including diuretics, corticosteroids, lithium, insulin, and other diabetes treatments.
Pregnancy
- Not generally recommended during pregnancy because of limited human safety data and potential fetal and neonatal kidney-development concerns.
- Patients who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or who become pregnant should contact their healthcare professional promptly for treatment review.
- Breastfeeding is generally not recommended during treatment because it is not known whether the combination is safe for a nursing infant and empagliflozin may affect the developing kidney.
