Benefits

  • Improves blood-glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • May be used alone or together with diet, exercise, and other antidiabetic medicines.
  • May provide cardiovascular, heart-failure, or kidney-related benefits when specifically prescribed for appropriate patients.

Usage & Safety

For Adult

  • The usual starting dose is 10 mg once daily, taken in the morning, with or without food.
  • For additional blood-glucose control, a healthcare professional may increase the dose to 25 mg once daily when appropriate and tolerated.
  • Maintain adequate fluid intake unless a healthcare professional has advised fluid restriction.
  • Dosage selection should consider kidney function, hydration status, age, and other diabetes medicines.

For Children

  • Safety and effectiveness for routine use in children and adolescents under 18 years have not been adequately established.
  • Do not use in children unless specifically prescribed and supervised by a specialist.
  • No general pediatric weight-based dose is established for this product.

Side Effects

  • Common effects may include increased urination, thirst, genital fungal infections, urinary tract infections, and symptoms related to volume depletion such as dizziness.
  • Low blood glucose is more likely when used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
  • Serious effects may include diabetic ketoacidosis, severe dehydration, low blood pressure, serious urinary or genital infections, and allergic reactions.
  • Seek urgent medical attention for nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual tiredness, difficulty breathing, confusion, severe weakness, fever, or pain and swelling around the genital or perineal area.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in patients with a known serious allergy or hypersensitivity to empagliflozin or any tablet ingredient.
  • Not intended for treatment of type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Use is generally unsuitable in patients receiving dialysis or with severe kidney impairment for blood-glucose control.
  • Use cautiously in patients with dehydration, low blood pressure, recurrent urinary or genital infections, or a history of diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Temporarily discontinue and seek medical advice during major surgery, prolonged fasting, or serious acute illness when advised by a healthcare professional.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Insulin and sulfonylureas may increase the risk of hypoglycemia; dose adjustment may be required.
  • Diuretics and other medicines that lower blood pressure may increase the risk of dehydration, dizziness, or low blood pressure.
  • Medicines or conditions that cause fluid loss, including vomiting, diarrhea, prolonged fasting, or excessive alcohol intake, may increase the risk of dehydration and ketoacidosis.
  • Tell the healthcare professional about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements before use.
  • It may be taken with or without food; maintain consistent hydration unless fluid restriction has been prescribed.

Pregnancy

  • Do not use during pregnancy unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional; alternative treatment is generally preferred, particularly during the second and third trimesters.
  • Inform the prescriber immediately if pregnancy occurs or is planned.
  • Breastfeeding is generally not recommended during treatment because potential effects on the infant's developing kidneys cannot be excluded.
