Usage & Safety
For Adult
- For healing erosive esophagitis: 60 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks, or as prescribed.
- Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush or chew the capsule contents.
- May be taken with or without food.
- For maintenance therapy or non-erosive GERD, lower strengths are generally used according to the prescriber's instructions.
For Children
- Use in children aged 12 years and older only under medical supervision and according to the prescribed indication.
- The 60 mg strength is generally used for healing erosive esophagitis when prescribed by a healthcare professional.
- Use in children under 12 years is not routinely recommended unless specifically directed by a pediatrician.
- Dosage should not be calculated or adjusted solely by body weight without medical advice.
Side Effects
- Common effects may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, headache, and upper respiratory tract symptoms.
- Constipation, dry mouth, indigestion, and abdominal discomfort may occur.
- Seek urgent medical attention for severe allergic reactions, persistent watery diarrhea, severe rash or blistering, muscle spasms, seizures, irregular heartbeat, or symptoms of kidney inflammation.
- Prolonged use may be associated with low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, bone fractures, fundic gland polyps, or Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea.
Contraindications
- Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to dexlansoprazole, other proton pump inhibitors, or any capsule component.
- Do not use with rilpivirine-containing medicines.
- Avoid or use only under specialist supervision in severe hepatic impairment.
- Seek medical evaluation for difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, or anemia.
- Long-term or high-dose use should be medically monitored because of possible fracture, low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, and infection risks.
Precautions & Warnings
- Do not combine with rilpivirine-containing products.
- Use caution with medicines whose absorption depends on stomach acidity, including some azole antifungals, erlotinib, dasatinib, nilotinib, and iron salts.
- Tell the doctor before use with methotrexate, digoxin, tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, warfarin, HIV medicines, or other medicines requiring close monitoring.
- Strong CYP2C19 or CYP3A4 inhibitors and inducers, such as voriconazole, rifampicin, or St. John's wort, may affect treatment.
- Alcohol and trigger foods may worsen reflux symptoms even though they are not direct drug interactions.
Pregnancy
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed after assessment of potential benefits and risks.
- Consult a healthcare professional before use while breastfeeding because it is not established whether dexlansoprazole passes into human milk.
- Do not self-medicate persistent heartburn during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
