Benefits

  • Used for the treatment of focal-onset seizures, with or without progression to bilateral convulsive seizures.
  • May be prescribed alone or as add-on therapy, depending on the patient's condition and local prescribing guidance.

Usage & Safety

For Adult

  • Take once daily exactly as prescribed by a neurologist or physician.
  • Adult treatment is commonly started at a lower dose and increased gradually according to seizure control, tolerability, kidney function, and concurrent medicines.
  • Measure each dose with an accurate oral syringe or measuring device and shake the suspension thoroughly before use.

For Children

  • Use in children only when specifically prescribed by a pediatric neurologist or physician.
  • Pediatric dosing is individualized according to age, body weight, kidney function, seizure type, and other antiseizure medicines.
  • Do not use in infants or children below the locally approved age range unless directed by a specialist.

Side Effects

  • Common effects may include dizziness, sleepiness, headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, blurred or double vision, impaired coordination, and vertigo.
  • Low blood sodium may occur and can cause nausea, headache, confusion, unusual tiredness, muscle cramps, or worsening seizures.
  • Serious effects may include severe allergic reaction, serious skin rash, mood or behavioral changes, suicidal thoughts, fainting, or significant coordination or vision problems.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in patients with a known allergy to eslicarbazepine acetate, eslicarbazepine, oxcarbazepine, or any product ingredient.
  • Use cautiously in patients with low blood sodium, kidney disease, liver disease, heart rhythm or conduction problems, or a history of serious drug-related rash.
  • Seek urgent medical attention for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering rash, severe weakness, confusion, fainting, or worsening seizures.
  • Do not stop treatment suddenly without medical advice, as abrupt withdrawal may worsen seizures.

Precautions & Warnings

  • May reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives; discuss reliable non-hormonal or additional contraception with a healthcare professional.
  • Tell the prescriber about all antiseizure medicines, especially carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, or other medicines affecting sodium or the nervous system.
  • Alcohol, sedatives, sleeping medicines, opioids, and other medicines that cause drowsiness may increase dizziness and sleepiness.
  • Provide a complete list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements before starting treatment.

Pregnancy

  • Discuss pregnancy or plans to become pregnant with a specialist before starting or continuing treatment; do not stop the medicine abruptly.
  • Eslicarbazepine acetate may reduce the reliability of hormonal contraception, including some contraceptive pills.
  • Breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare professional because the active metabolite may pass into breast milk and infant effects are not fully established.
