Usage & Safety
For Adult
- The usual adult starting dose is 50 mg twice daily.
- Depending on response and tolerability, the dose may be adjusted within 25 mg to 100 mg twice daily.
- The maximum usual total daily dose is 200 mg.
- Measure the syrup with an accurate oral syringe or measuring device; do not adjust the dose without medical advice.
For Children
- Use in children should be directed by a pediatric neurologist or physician and is generally weight-based.
- Children may require twice-daily dosing adjusted according to age, body weight, seizure control, and tolerability.
- Safety and dosing in very young infants require specialist assessment; do not use in children without a prescription.
Side Effects
- Common effects may include sleepiness, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, headache, and irritability.
- Mood or behavioral changes, agitation, aggression, anxiety, depression, or unusual thoughts may occur.
- Seek urgent medical help for severe allergic reactions, facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, severe rash, suicidal thoughts, or markedly abnormal behavior.
Contraindications
- Do not use in patients with a known allergy to brivaracetam or any product ingredient.
- Use cautiously in patients with liver disease, a history of depression or suicidal thoughts, or previous behavioral reactions to antiseizure medicines.
- Do not stop treatment suddenly, as this may increase seizure frequency or trigger prolonged seizures.
Precautions & Warnings
- Tell the physician about all antiseizure medicines, sedatives, sleeping medicines, opioids, and other medicines that cause drowsiness.
- Rifampicin and other medicines that strongly affect drug-metabolizing enzymes may reduce or alter brivaracetam exposure.
- Alcohol may increase dizziness, drowsiness, impaired coordination, and other central nervous system effects.
- Do not start, stop, or change other medicines without consulting the prescriber or pharmacist.
Pregnancy
- Use during pregnancy only when clearly prescribed after assessment of the potential benefits and risks.
- Do not stop brivaracetam suddenly during pregnancy, because uncontrolled seizures can harm the mother and fetus.
- Discuss pregnancy planning, folic acid supplementation, and pregnancy-registry options with the treating specialist.
- Brivaracetam may pass into breast milk; breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare professional, with monitoring of the infant for sleepiness, poor feeding, or inadequate weight gain.
