  • Benign gastric and duodenal ulcers
  • Prevention of duodenal-ulcer relapse
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other excessive-acid secretion disorders

Usage & Safety

For Adult

  • Take only as prescribed and swallow with water; it may be taken with or without food.
  • Typical regimens may include 20 mg twice daily for gastroesophageal reflux disease or 40 mg once daily at night for gastric or duodenal ulcer treatment.
  • For prevention of duodenal-ulcer relapse, 20 mg once daily at night may be used.
  • Dosage and treatment duration should be individualized, particularly in kidney impairment or severe acid-related disease.

For Children

  • Use in children only on the advice of a pediatrician.
  • Pediatric dosing is weight-based and depends on the condition; do not give this 20 mg tablet unless the prescribed dose and tablet strength are appropriate.
  • Children with kidney impairment may require dose reduction or an increased dosing interval.

Side Effects

  • Common effects may include headache, dizziness, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, and fatigue.
  • Less common effects include skin rash, itching, muscle cramps, joint pain, and changes in liver enzymes.
  • Seek urgent medical help for facial or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, severe rash or blistering, fainting, palpitations, confusion, or unusual bleeding.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in patients with a known allergy to famotidine or any tablet ingredient.
  • Avoid use in patients with previous serious hypersensitivity to other H2-receptor antagonists unless specifically directed by a clinician.
  • Use cautiously in kidney disease; dose adjustment may be required.
  • Persistent, recurrent, or alarming symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, or severe abdominal pain require medical assessment before treatment.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Antacids may be used when advised, but separate them from famotidine by approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Famotidine may affect the absorption of medicines that require an acidic stomach environment, including some azole antifungals; consult a pharmacist or prescriber.
  • Tell the prescriber about all medicines, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and supplements, especially medicines affected by kidney function.
  • Alcohol and smoking may worsen acid-related symptoms and should be avoided or limited.

Pregnancy

  • Use during pregnancy only when recommended by a healthcare professional after considering expected benefits and potential risks.
  • Available observational data have not shown a clear increase in congenital malformations with famotidine exposure, but evidence remains limited.
  • Famotidine passes into breast milk in low amounts and is generally not expected to cause adverse effects in breastfed infants; consult a clinician before use while breastfeeding.
